Fire inside of minecraft has been nurfed some but it can still be a very effective way to farm. The spread of fire on minecraft has been slowed rapidly mainly because people have complained that their entire lifes work has gone up in smoke at one point because one of their evil friends by accident or on purpose has started a fire near their work and it was destroyed within minutes. Now it make take up to an hour to clear a field but someone who knows how to multi task will take advantage of the system.

Minecraft Flint and Steel

To create Flint and Steel you need one Iron Ignot  and one Coal.

Here is the crafting recipe.

This will create one  Flint and Steel

Minecraft Flint is used to start fire on objects adjacent to where you right click use the flint. To start a forest fire simply walk up next to the wood, right click your Minecraft Flint and Steel and watch the world burn.
